"Exploring the Woods" Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Exploring the Woods" ©2020 Niki Gulley
12" x 18" textured oil painting

I painted "Exploring the Woods" on a beautiful fall day at one of my favorite spots near our home. The brilliant gold and tangerine leaves were glowing from the sun backlighting them, and the gnarly tree trunks were forming an intricate web that I just had to capture. Painted with palette knife and thick oil paint, this landscape is filled with tons of texture, color, movement and energy!

New "Oldest House in Glen Rose" by Palette Knife Artist Niki Gulley

"Oldest House in Glen Rose" ©2019 Niki Gulley
12" x 16" textured oil painting • Glenrose, TX

Painted on location in Glen Rose, Texas with the company of my Outdoor Painters Society, I chose to paint the oldest house in town. It was so full of character and charm and I loved the big huge front porch and white-washed picket fence. The pergola welcomes you to step right in and relax on a rocking chair, visiting with neighbors and loved ones. Dramatic lighting and shadows add to the warmth of the moment.

"Weathered Cisterns" Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Weathered Cisterns" ©2019 Niki Gulley
18" x 12" textured oil painting • Grapevine, TX

I painted these water tanks and grain mill in the distance recently in Grapevine, TX on a bright, crisp winter morning. I loved the colorful rust contrasting against the blue-grays of the metal containers, and I worked with thick layers of oil paint and my palette knife to capture that texture. The whole scene had an industrial feel to it, so I chose to include the telephone pole and wires in the foreground to set that feel and also lead you into the scene. Adding a touch of whimsy to an otherwise hardened scene, I like the play of recent man made touches juxtaposed against 19th and 20th century modern technology.

New "Nature's Ascension" Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Nature's Ascension” ©2019 Niki Gulley
16" x 12” textured oil on painting

I created "Nature's Ascension" on a beautiful day last fall at one of my favorite painting spots near our home. I was attracted to the colorful dappled light raking across these steps and hillside, beckoning you to ascend. Meanwhile this majestic sycamore stands tall in its fall glory, also inviting you into the distance to discover what's beyond. Painted with palette knife and thick oil paint, this landscape is filled with color, movement and energy!

“Resting Spot” ©2019 Niki Gulley
14" x 11” textured oil on painting

I painted "Resting Spot" on location in East Texas amongst the piney woods. This scene was so peaceful and I liked how the evergreens provided shade, keeping the warm Texas sun at bay. One lone boat sits on the shoreline, inviting you to sit down and row across the tranquil lake. I hope this piece transports you to a quiet weekend escape, surrounded by nature, with not a care in the world.

New Autumn Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Exploring the Woods II" ©2018 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 12" x 18" textured oil painting

Just Sold! I created "Exploring the Woods II" on another beautiful day this fall at one of my favorite painting spots near our home. The kaleidoscope of autumn colors was ablaze, and I was attracted to the dappled light sneaking through small gaps in the forested canopy, illuminating the winding path and brilliant grasses below. Playing off of the diagonal shadows on the ground and the zig zag arrangement of the trunks, I feel like the patterns create a kind of rhythm, adding to the sounds in the woods in this canvas. Painted with palette knife and thick oil paint, this landscape is filled with color, movement and energy!

New "Bridge to Yesterday" Palette Knife Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

“Bridge to Yesterday" ©2017 Niki Gulley
9" x 12"" textured oil painting

I painted "Bridge to Yesterday" on location when we visited New England last October during the height of fall foliage. The kaleidoscope of autumn colors was ablaze, and I was attracted to this brilliant red covered bridge connecting the golden landscape. Choosing this vantage point where you can see some of the river cascading over this rocky edge to the water below, you get a sense of how beautiful the surrounding scenery was on this gorgeous fall morning. Painted with palette knife and thick oil paint, this landscape is filled with color, movement and energy!

New Plein Air Painting from the Dallas Arboretum by Niki Gulley

“Water Wall," Dallas Arboretum ©2013 Niki Gulley
9" x 12" Plein Air Oil Painting

I painted this oil of the "Water Wall" at the Dallas Arboretum a couple of weeks ago as part of my demonstration during my plein-air painting workshop. I loved the golden light hitting the stucco and the interesting shadows that were created from the trellis above. Working with a combination of brush and palette knife, the final painting is full of color and texture.

Last Day Venice Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Venice ©2013 Niki Gulley
8" x 10" oil painting

On the last day of our Venice Art Trek, St. Mark's Square was packed with tourists and people dressed up in costumes for Carnivalé which we loved seeing, but we were hoping to find a quieter spot to paint. So we left the photographers and headed back into the local neighborhoods where it was very peaceful and picturesque. I liked the ornamentation on this bridge and the way the light danced across the water and the under side of the structure.

If you'd like to join us on one of our upcoming European Art Treks, please let me know. Closer to home I'll be leading a Plein Air Painting Workshop sponsored through the Good Art Company gallery in Fredericksburg, TX, April 5-7.

Painting Workshop at the Dallas Arboretum taught by Niki Gulley

"Reflective Moment," Dallas Arboretum ©2012 by Niki Gulley
18" x 24" oil on canvas

This painting was inspired by a gorgeous autumn day at the Dallas Arboretum. I was drawn to this magical little spot because it was so tranquil there that day, that you just wanted to sit and enjoy the scenery on this bench nestled across the water. The brilliant colors of the fall foliage, the crystal clear sky, and the soft light raking across the lily pond caught my eye. I liked how the late afternoon shadows were being cast and golden highlights were forming, adding to a peaceful, but happy feeling.

On  Feb. 4th, I'll be teaching a Landscape Painting Workshop at the Dallas Arboretum. For more information, go to dallasarboretum.org/AdultEducation/CreativeArts.htm.

If you'd have any questions, please e-mail me at Niki Gulley.

Painting at the Dallas Arboretum with Niki Gulley

Bamboo Forest – 8" x 10" oil painting by Niki Gulley

Afternoon Location: the Dallas Arboretum, Bamboo Garden

In the afternoon of my Plein Air Painting Workshop that I taught at the Dallas Arboretum last weekend, we found another quiet painting spot at the furthest end of the gardens. Again, it was really interesting to see how half a dozen painters all view the scene differently. Some students chose to paint roses, some potted plants and tucked away benches, and others the dappled light coming through the trees highlighting some of the mums and pathways.

My EasyL pochade box and palette set-up.

I've always loved the bamboo garden, so that's what I chose for my subject. I like the feeling of being protected by the tall stalks and the canopy they form overhead. There is a peacefulness back there, so that you feel like you are immersed in the middle of a forest. I also liked the way the light was filtering through in just a couple of places to illuminate the walkway and the distant clearing.

One of my students, Ann McCann, painting the Arboretum's beautiful rose bushes.

Or, to see more of my local Dallas and travel paintings, please stop by the Bath House Cultural Center for my last show of the year, Nov. 18th - 20th. dallasculture.org/bathhouseculturecenter/index.asp
