Iris Japanese Garden Oahu Hawaii Pastel by Phyllis O'Shields Artist Contemporary Impressionism

Iris Japanese Garden - Oahu, Kialua, Hawaii
from my Sketchbook  Pastel  9 x 12 inches
Phyllis O'Shields Artist Contemporary Impressionism

This post continues exerts from my sketchbooks recording beautiful specimens from private homes gardens in the Caribbean and Hawaii. This particular Iris was found in the home garden of Mr Tanaka living on the ocean in  Kialua.  Mr Tanaka was from Japan and had lived and brought up his family in Hawaii. He as since passed away but remembered by all of us with great affection and reverence.   I lived down the block from Mr Tanaka on the ocean in Kialua and enjoyed many special hours spent in his garden.

As typical in all islands culture Mr Tanaka grew many of the flowers of his native homeland and kept his special  memories alive that way.

http://www.japan-iris.org/E_index.htm  This is a link to the Japanese Iris Society and they show many photos of special varieties.  I hope you will enjoy a  visit.  Later I will post  paintings of Mr Tanaka's
 lily pond and koi.

Mossy Falls II - watercolor waterfalls by Gretchen Kelly

I went out painting waterfalls last weekend in Palenville, which is at the foothills of the Catskills. This was my quick sketch of Mossy Falls. It is on the property of my friend, Jamie- plein air Artist buddy of mine. She has gotten me out a lot in the past few years.
9"x12" watercolor, gouache, graphite

This is the final painting of the day. It started to rain so we went inside. Isn't it dreamy that Jamie has about 4 waterfalls like this on her property. There is never a lack of beauty to paint on Mother Natures Earth.
To purchase this painting @ $250. - go to my blog: www.gretchenkellyart2.blogspot.com
