"I look at this painting now, and what I remember most clearly is the deep autumn smell of the bed of cottonwood leaves upon which I sat to paint this, and their rustling as I shifted to mix a color or reach for my thremos of tea. Painted at the Brush Creek Ranch, Wyoming."
